Here are some practical tips to choose the right standing lamp for the living room or the bedroom, playing between styles, to furnish your home with taste and to enhance every room by guaranteeing a perfect light.

Let’s take a look together at the considerations to be made.

1. LIGHT FUNCTION: WHICH KIND OF FLOOR LAMP SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

    1. LIGHT FUNCTIONALITY

To establish what could be the right position for our standing light, we must have a clear understanding of the function it must perform.

The questions to ask ourselves are simple:

    • Is it mainly a piece of furniture?
    • Does it have a specific practical function, for example, should it light up a working area and a

    desk?

    • Is it a reading lamp?

Clarifying the functionality of the floor lamp allows us to identify not only the most suitable type of floor lamp, but also the type of light required and the type of light bulb that best suits our needs.

In this sense, we can establish three different types of lighting click here to find out more:

    AMBIENT LIGHTING

Floor lamps reflect light upwards or sideways. An example is the classic floor lamp with a lampshade  or a design floor lamp which unleashes light laterally starting from the base. This type of floor light is suitable both in living rooms and in bedrooms and is often also an important piece of furniture within the environment.

    FUNCTIONAL LIGHTING

The floor lamp is focused towards a specific point and projects the light downwards, such as, for example, arc floor lamps or modern floor lamps  from Magma collection with a metal structure and pendant crystal drops.

    ACCENT LIGHTING

The light beam of the floor lamp is aimed at a specific object to attract attention

towards a specific area of the room or is itself the focal point of attention, such as the design floor lamp from Sfera collection.

Whether it’s a classic floor lamp or a modern floor lamp, this type of lighting will help give the room some character and define its design.

The style of the floor lamp can accompany the general concept chosen for that specific room or create a breaking point, by mixing styles and can also contribute to providing for royalty to the environment.

2. THE SHAPE OF THE FLOOR LAMP AND ITS STYLE

As we have seen, there are mainly three types of floor lamps that respond to as many types of lighting and these also dictate the shape of the lamp.

Let’s distinguish the different types together!

 CLASSIC FLOOR LAMP

The classic floor lamp usually consists of a metal structure and a lampshade. Of course, the structure can also be made of a different material, for example, wood , as well as the lampshade which can, for example, be made of glass, such as the LED floor lamp  from Marea collection  or, in a more luxurious version, in crystal  or again in design materials such as plexiglass .

ARC FLOOR LAMP

The arc floor lamp has a long and curved stem, at the apex of which is the light source. Its origins date back to the 1960s and this model is still very successful today. At the beginning, this lamp was not designed for homes, but mainly for restaurants and bars; only later did it enter homes and often within living rooms alongside armchairs and sofas, giving a real touch of elegance to the whole environment with its pendant light.

SCULPTURE LAMP

These are design floor lamps – real pieces of furniture, which can find space in every corner of the lounge or living room. The sculptural shape  and the large size make these lighting fixtures the real protagonists of every environment.

Finally, another important parameter to assess is the height of the floor lamp and its final position.

3. WHAT HEIGHT SHOULD THE FLOOR LAMP HAVE?

The height of the floor lamp is another very important factor. The higher the light source, the greater the diffusion of light. Consequently, a tall floor lamp will produce perfect ambient lighting, while it will not be suitable to light up a working area or a corner dedicated to reading.

Furthermore, the height of the floor lamp must be proportionate with the surrounding space, with the type of furniture and, obviously, with the other sources of light in the room.

In a living room with low furniture, a tall floor lamp may not fill the whole room, while a low or ground-level floor lamp could create a design and refined effect.

In principle, however, floor lamps have a height of no less than 70 cm with the light bulbs exceeding the eye line, in order not to annoy people around. If the floor lamp is lower, it is important that the light source is carefully hidden to prevent it from being unpleasant.

The height of the standing lamp also determines the width of the base: the higher the floor lamp, the greater the diameter of the base. Therefore, in a small environment, where space is limited, it will be more useful to opt for medium-height floor lamps.

Having a bright and welcoming home is essential not only for aesthetic reasons, but also to prevent eye strain and improve the perception of colours and of shades within the environment. At the same time, in some environments, it is important to be able to control the intensity of the light.

Many floor lamps are also dimmable and this function allows you to adjust the level of brightness according to your needs or to the atmosphere that you want to create: an ideal feature, for example, in the bedroom.

4. WHERE TO PLACE FLOOR LAMPS ROOM BY ROOM

Standing lights can be placed in any room of your home, from the entrance to the bedroom. Even the dining table can be perfectly lit up with an arc lamp, as long as the height is more than 1.60 metres.

Let’s have a look at how to place these lighting fixtures in the different areas of your home.

LIVING ROOM FLOOR LAMP

The living room is one of those traditional spaces in which to place floor lighting fixtures. Usually, living room floor lamps are placed near a sofa, an armchair or near a coffee table.

For this reason, the floor lamps by Patrizia Volpato can have many different types of finishes in order to best respond to every need in terms of taste and style.

LOUNGE FLOOR LAMPS

In the lounge, floor lamps can perform several functions. They can be used as a piece of furniture or to create a particular corner in the room, such as a reading corner. A dimmable LED floor lamp offers the opportunity to combine energy savings and light intensity, this way perfectly completing the existing lighting system.

BEDROOM FLOOR LAMPS

In the bedroom, standing lamps can also be used as a substitute for bedside lamps, by considering the right height. Stem floor lamps in pairs – one on each side of the bed – thanks to their “minimal” shape, are an excellent solution capable of giving elegance and a serene atmosphere.

Alternatively, floor lamps can be used to highlight a specific area of the room, by drawing attention to it. In this case, either sculpture or arc lamps can be used, depending on the size of the room and the style of the furniture.
