Why does the International Day of Women and Girls in Science exist?
February 11th is a relevant date internationally speaking as it celebrates the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
Starting from 2015, the year when such event was issued by United Nation’s General Assembly, the main aim has been that of acknowledging the essential role of women in science and technology.
Such occurrence offers the opportunity to remind the international community that science and gender equality must progress together and at the same time in order to be able to face the main global challenges and to reach all the objectives of 2030 Agenda.
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is implemented by UNESCO and UN-Women together with institutions and partners of the civil society that aim at promoting women and girls in science. This particular day offers the chance to promote the total and equal access in the scientific field of women and girls.
Gender equality is a global priority for UNESCO: supporting girls, as well las their education and their full capability of expressing their ideas are means to obtain progress and peace.

This year’s celebrations of such day will focus on “Women scientists at the forefront in the fight against COVID-19” and it will bring together experts that operate in different fields yet all connected to the recent pandemic from all over the world, by means of an online meeting.
The UNESCO website states: “COVID-19 pandemic has clearly demonstrated the fundamental role of women researchers within the different phases of the fight against COVID-19, from the progress within the knowledge on the virus, to the development of specific techniques for the tests and including the vaccine against the virus.”
At the same time, COVID-19 pandemic also had a significative negative impact on women scientists, as it especially hit those women who were at the beginning of their careers, this way contributing to widen the gender gap already existing in science.
Such inequalities must be faced by new political actions and thanks to initiatives and mechanisms to support women in science.
Patrizia Volpato: a company of and for women
Here at Patrizia Volpato, a company founded by a woman and composed by a high percentage of women, we strongly believe in the sensitization offered by such international days, dedicated to women within the working environment, in relation to any field.
In our staff there are many women that have the most different roles: from the production of our precious chandeliers, to the design and planning of the best lighting solutions, as well as in marketing and sales, so as to offer the best service to all clients.
Our wish is that the gap between man and woman within all working environments may become smaller and smaller, without stereotypes and prejudices that make women’s careers much harsher than men’s.
